The Fluence/AES Los Alamitos 100MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is among the largest operational energy storage facilities in the world. A BESS is a system of advanced batteries designed to store electricity generated from power sources and deliver it back to the grid when demand spikes or capacity limits are reached.
Capable of delivering up to 100 megawatts for four hours (400MWh), the Alamitos BESS provides fast, reliable power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses—instantly responding within milliseconds, compared to the 12–36 hour ramp-up time of traditional generation facilities.
This system also plays a critical role in supporting a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Southern California Edison (SCE) customers by enhancing the grid’s ability to incorporate more renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
